MEC LEHARI ORDERS DEPARTMENTAL OFFICIALS TO EXPEDITE SOLUTION TO LEARNER TRANSPORT



The MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari has ordered senior officials to hasten solution to the learner transport challenges. Since 2020 schools opening in January, several schools in the Province have had challenges with learner transport. Part of the problem is that transport operators are owed by the department. The Department has however paid till October, 2019.

The department has since the beginning of the year been engaging the Treasury to assist in paying outstanding dues. MEC Lehari said the Executive Council has approved the request for more money. Although the committed funds are not adequate, it will at least assist in paying outstanding invoices submitted by the operators.

“Learner transport is a serious issue that has a potential to tarnish the image of the department. We are transporting the future of this country and we must do all we can to bring this matter to a finality”. Said MEC Lehari.

In a meeting attended by the South African National Small Bus Operators (SANSBOC), the MEC also appealed to operators to engage the department immediately they experience challenges to avoid protracted delays, as it were.

“We must avoid recriminations and public spats. Let’s engage each other honestly and sincerely. Our intention is that by June, all the challenges around learner transport should have been resolved – for good”. Committed Honourable Sello Lehari as he ordered the responsible Department to speed-up internal processes.

The MEC directed that there should be a mass meeting with all operators by 27th March 2020 in Montshiwa, Mahikeng to address issues bedevilling learner transport once and for all.
